What should I charge to operate and maintain a small package plant visited once a week?

Even if you’re their only certified operator, you’re also taking responsibility for overseeing that facility. Since it’s a really small town and it’s what – like an hour away – your mileage expense alone is going to be nearly $100 each trip. Then you’ve got your time considerations to think about while you’re performing the work that needs to get done. So the real question here is this: how much can that town afford to pay? It’s a limited taxpayer base and they’re already paying a town employee who probably isn’t going to be fired. Whether it’s the mayor, the town manager, or whomever [it’s all probably consolidated into one person anyway, a town that small] – I’d ask about the budget. They probably have plans to pay you a certain amount already. Ask them what that amount is. If they can pay you more than you’re planning to ask, don’t limit yourself by coming in too low. If they don’t want to pay you what your minimum amount is, then you’ve got to do some thinking about whether or not you want to do this at all. And Sterling is right – you’re going to need to consider contingencies, emergencies, and call outs. It will happen sooner or later.
