Settling or flotation: how to choose?

Hello, In fact it depends on the characteristics of the suspended solids in the water: If they are mineral (silt etc.), opt for settling. If they're organic (unicellular algae, phytoplankton), flotation might be better. - Does the water come from a river, a lake? A lake is more sensitive to algal blooms. As I said in a recent related post, you have to perform jar testing. And if you don't have the requisite equipment, do this simple test: collect one or two liters of raw water in a graduated cylinder and see if settling occurs “naturally”. If yes, the flocculation/settling process should work for you, if not (aspect of the same water several hours later or if you see floating matter), then look into flotation.
