How frequent should one exercise a home’s ball valve to prevent locking-up (locked in the open or closed position)?

Depends on the service of the valve and what the internal material of the valve it is but normally if this is for strictly home use you will rarely need to stroke a ball valve, but if its on a sewer gas service then it will need to be stroked a few times a year for best life
Let me clarity. I was referring to a main water valve for a home. Does that change your answer?
You must have had to replace one that was locked up. Probably every 6 months to a year. If it was mine, when ever I looked at it.
Would you answer differ for brass vs stainless steel ball? Which is less likely to leak (more durable) from the exercising? We are working on remote valve switch and want to incorporate maintenance intervals that do not damage the valve.
