Feedback on how to identify closed valves

Replacing the valve box cover with a colored one while the valve is shut is a good idea—simple and easy to locate.
What type of valves? I would put a mark on the valve. An "O" for open on the pipe work and a line ontop of the valve faceing the "O." A marker/paint pent works well. We have these markings on our filter rate control valves for when they need to manually operated during maintenance.
In the course of studying hydraulic modeling, we identify the closed valves by inserting a length of foam and labeling it on the curb box. You can literally use water noodles. These can be cut and adjusted to the depth you need.
